The Whopper & the Almighty (The Subjectification of the Gospel)

Thursday, March 1, 2012

A famous fast-food franchise made famous the slogan, 'Have it your way.' Unfortunately the significance of those words go much farther than drive through of the local fast food restaurant. We live in a fast food culture and we abide in a culture of set on "Have it your way." To put it another way, American culture increasingly views truth as if it were packaged in the styrofoam carton of a fast food restaurant. Truth is no longer a matter of what exists, what never changes, what underlies everything else. Truth is true only as much as it's true for you. There was a time in America's history when there was a general consensus on truth - Truth was absolute - Truth was grounded in the Word of God. Even the Declaration of Independence declares, "We hold these truths to be self-evidence... all men are created equal..." In other words, America came into existence based on foundation that truth is absolute, unchanging, and grounded in the God of Creation, the God of the Bible. In ancient times, it was Israel that knew these truths, having been founded and established on the Word of God. The nation proclaimed "Hear O Israel, the Lord our God is One." There is hardly a more profound statement of objective truth than that. But Israel turned away from the truth as it turned away from God. And the sign of this turning was the introduction of idols and foreign gods. If one didn't want to follow the ways of God, all one needed to do was to choose a god of one's liking, one's preference - "Have it your way," "Hold the pickles," "Hold Jehovah." This reveals the connection between the rejection of absolute truth and idolatry. We are now witnessing this dynamic playing out in America. As the culture increasingly rejects any objective truth, as it moves toward a fast-food version of morality and spirituality, it increasingly moves toward idolatry. Just as America has banned the Ten Commandments from public ground, it has increasingly welcomed in the idols of sensuality, materialism, sexual immorality, the self. As the Word of God declares of ancient Israel, "Each one did what was right in his own eyes." This dynamic affects everything. If there is no objective truth, then man becomes the measure of all things, the god who decides what is right and wrong. Then there's nothing stopping the state, the courts, or the culture from redefining marriage, from redefining life, from redefining right and wrong. And as we watch the redefinition of man, woman, marriage, family, we must take note that these are only symptoms of a civilization that has long before turned away from the absolute truth of God and the Word. How then do we respond? How do we answer an end-time culture that increasingly declares "There is no truth, but what is true for me." We respond by all the more living our lives in light of the Word of God. We don't bend the Word of God to conform to what is popular or politically correct - or even to what we desire or will - rather, we bend our lives to the Word of God. We put the objective truth of God over our subjective opinion, will, desire, or lust. We conform all things to the will of God. For the truth is not a happy meal... but the Almighty.
