In ancient Israel, there was the law of the "Goel." If a woman found herself a widow, the brother or nearest relative of her deceased husband would or could marry her and redeem her husband's line and the house. He would be called the "Goel," the "Kinsman Redeemer." Because of the "Goel," she would be able to have children, and her debts would be covered; her shame would be lifted up. Psalm 103 says: "Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget none of His benefits." In the fourth verse it says, "Who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion." But in the original Hebrew it doesn't say exactly that. It says who "Goels you." It is saying that God is your "goel;" your kinsman redeemer, the one who looks at your life. He joins Himself to your life so your sorrows would be turned to joy, your shame would be lifted up, and your life would become fruitful. It means that you are no longer alone. You are married. Because He is committed to you, He is now with you. He redeemed your life; He has "goeled" you.
From Message #1010 - The Goel Redemption
Walk in boldness and strength today, bless the Lord, even in your valleys and sorrows; your Redeemer walks with you.
