The philosopher Aristoppus lived a comfortable life by flattering the tyrant king Denys. He began looking down on his less prosperous fellow philosophers. One of them was Digoeness. One day Aristoppus saw Diogeness washing some vegetables. Scornfully, he said to him, "If you would only learn how to flatter King Denys, you wouldn't have to be washing lentils. To which, Diogeness replied, "And you, if you had only learned to live on lentils, you would not have to flatter tyrants." If you are to live a life of righteousness, godliness, and greatness, you have to wean yourself from the world... from vested interests and dependencies. The more you content yourself with God... the more free you will be from the world. And the more free you are from the world, the more you'll be able to live a life that is holy, godly, and blessed. Esau lost the promise and the calling because he longed for lentils. Jacob found it, because he didn't. Be like Paul, content in all things, and you'll be free to live a life of greatness.
