Isaiah 11:1 speaks about the birth of Messiah. It says, A shoot shall spring forth out of the root of Jesse. However, the Hebrew word isn't really root. It's the word geza which means stump, a cut down tree. Messiah will be a shoot that will spring up out of the stump of Jesse. The stump should be dead, but a new shoot grows out of it. That's exactly how Messiah came. He didn't come from the tree of Jesse or David, for the House of Jesse and the Throne of David was cut down by the time Messiah came. The life of God is born in brokenness, coming when our dreams and plans are cut down. When what we wanted is cut off, the life of Messiah springs forth. Most of our spiritual growth comes not when we get what we want, but when what we planned for is cut down. So take all those disappointments, broken dreams and unfulfilled plans and give them to God, giving thanks. God's life will come through every one of them!rn
