Pentecost is the day when the Spirit was given. It's also, by the reckoning of the rabbis, the same exact day that the Old Covenant came in its power. It was on the day of Pentecost, known also as the Hebrew holy day of Shavuot many centuries earlier, that Moses was on Mount Sinai receiving the law, the Old Covenant. So, on the same day that God gave the law of the Old Covenant, He gave the Spirit of the New Covenant. In the giving of the Law, many died. The Hebrew reads tish-lo-shet-alfay or about three thousand. On the same day, many centuries later, when the Spirit was given on Pentecost, many came to eternal life. The Greek reads, hose-tres heli-roy-psyuche or about three thousand. What does it reveal? You'll never find life through laws of right and wrong. The only way to find and live in the power of true life is to open one's heart; to be filled by the Spirit of God, and to walk and be led by it, not just once, but every day!rn
