Joseph, son of Jacob, was a foreshadow of the Messiah. The Rabbis saw it and called Messiah, Mashiach Ben Joseph (Messiah Son of Joseph). The story of Joseph is filled with revelations about the mystery of Messiah. He was the beloved son of his father, rejected by his brothers, taken captive, falsely accused, bore the sins of others, descended into the pit, and then lifted up to the throne to become the savior of the land. The King of Egypt gave to Joseph, Asenath, to be his wife. Asenath was an Egyptian, a stranger to the promises, but now grafted in. What does this foreshadow and reveal about Messiah? The Bride of Messiah is largely made up of those who are outsiders, foreigners, those far away from Israel: the Gentiles. Even we who were born Jewish come to Messiah as outsiders, as those who have no right to marry Him. But rejoice, because Messiah marries you not because of who you are but because of who He is. It's the same grace with which Joseph loved and married the Egyptian Asenath. So too, Messiah has married an Egyptian bride. rn
