In Proverbs 11:17, there's a profound truth that can change your life. It reads, "The merciful man does good to his own soul, but the cruel man troubles his own flesh." The word for merciful man in Hebrew is khasid. It describes a person of compassion, someone kind, generous, and forgiving. The person who is harsh, cruel, selfish, or unforgiving does harm to his own soul. But the person of khasid, of mercy, love, and forgiveness does good to his own soul. This is profound. What it's saying is that the way you treat others is the way you end up being treated. Not only that, but it's the way you will end up treating your own soul, your own life. Treat others harshly, you'll treat your own life the same way. Don't forgive others, you won't be able to forgive yourself. Make a decision to renounce all condemnation, bitterness, and ill-will against your neighbor and become in God's grace a khasid, a person of mercy, love, compassion, generosity, and forgiveness. It will bring joy, blessing, and healing to those closest to you - and to one other life - your own.rn
