The Electric Throne

In the late 1890s, Emperor Menelik II of Ethiopia learned of a new invention used in executing criminals called the electric chair. He ordered three of them from the U.S. and when they arrived, he discovered that they needed electricity. Ethiopia had no electricity at the time, so to keep his investment from being a complete loss, he used one of the electric chairs as his royal throne. The cross is the ancient equivalent of an electric chair. It was the state's instrument of capital punishment. Who could take the equivalent of an electric chair, a vessel of execution and turn it into a symbol of love, hope and new life? Only the son of God could do that. Menelik reigned from an electric chair, but Messiah reigns from the cross. In the cross is His throne and the power to change darkness into light. And when you live by the cross you're living by the power of the King. For the cross of Messiah, the brutal instrument of execution, has, by the greatest miracle, become an instrument of life... and Messiah's very throne.
