If you ask a new believer how he's doing, he might say, "Great, I'm in Genesis." The next week he might say, "It couldn't be better. I'm in Exodus with Moses." Then something happens. A week later, he's in Leviticus, reading about entrails, kidneys and fat. He's defeated, he needs counseling. His reading project comes to an end. It isn't wrong to read the Bible from cover to cover, but the Bible isn't just a book - it's the Word of God. One single verse can change your life, if you truly take it to heart.
