In Israel, it rains most dramatically in the winter. In the summer, the dry river beds are a sign of the rains that once fell and of rains yet to come. These are known as wadis. When the rains come, the wadis fill and become flowing rivers. That's what's being spoken about in Isaiah 41:18: "I will give rivers in the desert." In the same way, your life was created as God's wadi. You were meant to be filled and to flow with the Spirit of God. So when you're feeling dry and empty, it's a reminder of who you are and for Whom you were made. A wadi bears witness not only of a river that may have once flowed, but of a river that can yet flow again. You were meant to flow with the abundance of His Spirit. So bring your emptiness to God and be open, and your life will flow with the reviving waters of the Holy Spirit as a river in the desert.
