In Leviticus 23:40, the Lord commanded Israel to celebrate Sukkot, the Feast of Tabernacles, with tree branches. Jewish people celebrate with three specific branches: The palm, the myrtle, and the willow branch - together they're called the Lulav. Tabernacles is celebrated in remembrance of the wilderness journey to the Promised Land. The myrtle is to remind them of the desert mountains, the palms of the desert planes, and the willows of the desert brooks that gave them water. For the children of God, the Promised Land is symbolic of heaven and the wilderness of this life we go through to get there. And we, too, are to celebrate the journey. The wilderness is sacred - it leads us to the Promised Land. Therefore, even with its sorrows and disappointments, it's a heavenly road because its end is heaven. So don't disparage or despise this life but be encouraged and walk on. For in heaven, you'll give thanks even for the valleys. Learn the mystery of the Lulav and remember, in heaven, you'll give thanks for the heavenly road you're walking on right now, on your way to the Promised Land.
