When I was a teenager, I had a rock band. We sometimes practiced in my house. One day my mother and father on returning home, walked in the door to a barrage of rock music. My father looked at my mother with an expression of 'he's your son.' My mother answered the look with, "well, it could be worse. He could be on drugs." For the past two thousand years, life has been pretty rough for the Jewish people. They've been persecuted, expelled, robbed, pillaged, plundered, hated, mocked, vilified, beaten, and killed. Yet with all that, they would say to each other, 'Things could be worse.' If you're a child of God, no matter what's going on in your life, good or bad, you're far better off than if you didn't know the Lord. So teach your heart this most Jewish of expressions, 'It could be worse.' Thanks to Messiah we inherit heaven instead of hell! Therefore, give thanks and rejoice no matter what, because you're better off than you could've been - a lot better off. For no matter what, it could be worse.
From Message #182 - The Blessings of Lima Beans
Today, no matter what negative thing comes your way - in light of eternity give thanks, rejoice, and tell yourself 'It could be worse.'
