ICELAND'S WAR AGAINST THE DISABLED

Shalom, to you my Friend and Co-Minister in the Great Commission-Word for the Month & for Wed., Nov. 1st. It came out in a CBS News report. It appeared to be news heralding a medical breakthrough. The report stated that Iceland is leading the world in -eradicating Down syndrome births.- But there was no medical breakthrough, no treatment or cure for genetic disorders. It was something very different. Iceland had decided that the answer and cure for children born with Down syndrome was. Extermination. In Iceland, the government mandates that doctors notify pregnant women who are carrying a child with Down syndrome of the option to end the life of their unborn child. In Iceland nearly 100 percent of women notified by their doctors that their unborn child has Down syndrome choose to abort the child. The CBS report appeared to frame the development as something close to a step of progress: Other countries aren't lagging too far behind in Down syndrome termination. Thus it would seem to be the wave of the future. Iceland, the report said, is on pace to virtually eliminate Down syndrome through abortion. Notice the word child has been eliminated or rather the child has turned into a disease that is being eliminated. Only the reality is that it is the child that is being eliminated. A counselor in an Iceland hospital speaks of the procedure this way: We don't look at abortion as a murder, she said. We look at it as a thing that we ended And I think that is more right than seeing it as a murder that's so black and white. Life isn't black and white. Life is grey. Could this be the wave of the future? The idea that those who have abnormalities are not worthy of life goes way back. It can be seen in the pagan practice of leaving ones unwanted child out in the cold to die of the elements. It can be seen in the writings of Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood, America's largest abortion organization. And it can be seen in the philosophy of Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich. We must take note, that before he launched the Holocaust and the annihilation of millions, he ordered the death of the disabled. How radically different is Messiah, Jesus, who came specifically for the lame, the blind, the crippled, the paralyzed, and the afflicted. He treated them as precious vessels created in the image of God. And for them He gave His life. So too He commands and warns: In as much as you did it to the least of these my brethren, you did it unto me. Let that be taken as a warning to a civilization that ends infirmity by ending people. And for us, let it be taken as a charge to defend the defenseless, to speak up for those who cannot, and to live as people of life. Your brother and co-laborer In His love and service, Jonathan
