As America's birthday approaches, consider these words from Proverbs: "Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people." America has known unprecedented greatness because of goodness in its ideals and purpose, not abilities. God has blessed America more than any other nation in history. Yet the second part of the ancient proverb remains: "sin is a reproach to any people." As much as America ceases to follow the ways of God, it will cease to be blessed. True greatness comes from goodness. This isn't only true for nations, but people. Too often we think in terms of greatness by means of achieving and expanding. We want things to be greater. We want to expand our bank accounts, homes, careers, influence, position, ministries, and reputation. But it's all backwards. You want to be great? Be good. You want to live a great life, focus on living a good life. Set your eyes on the Kingdom of God. You want greatness? Seek goodness. Live a life of compassion, righteousness, honesty, integrity, and godliness. Forget about being great. Be good instead, for goodness is greater than great.
From Message #981 - The City on the Hill
Today don't seek to get anything, but to give, to bless, and to seek goodness.
