Khanak: Narrow As A Verb

Thursday, March 14, 2019

Proverbs 22:6 says, "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it." But in the original Hebrew, it reads a little differently. The Hebrew word translated as ’train’ is ’khanak.’ ’Khanak’ literally means ’to narrow.’ So, it could be translated as, "Narrow the way for a child." What does that mean? It means that true love is not lax. Don’t be lax with your children- narrow their way. Protect them from what is ungodly and guide them away from evil and to the good. Filter what they receive and help them walk on a straight path. They will be blessed. And while you’re at it, try it on yourself. If you would live a life of discipleship, you have to ’khanak’ yourself. Narrow your own way- keep yourself on the narrow path, direct all things away from evil and to the Lord. Narrow your thought and your desires and your focus, or what you see and hear. Train your own self up in the Lord, and you won’t depart from His way. For the word ’khanak’ isn’t just for children - it’s for disciples.
