Isaiah's Goel

In Isaiah 41 it says, "I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your hand and says to you, don't fear, I'll help you. Don't be afraid... I'll help you, says the Lord your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel." A beautiful promise, but it is even more beautiful in the original language. In Israel there was a law, called the Law of the Goel. If a man married a woman and died before they could have children and the husband had a relative who was willing, that relative could redeem the woman. He would marry her, give her children, protect her, and restore her life. In this verse in Isaiah, it says that "I am the Lord your Redeemer." The word isn't just redeemer in Hebrew, but Goel. It is saying that God is now your Goel. No matter what you are going through, you are never going to be alone. So don't worry, don't be discouraged, for the Lord is your Goel. Do not be afraid, I Myself will help you declares the Lord, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel. Your Goel.
